What to Know About Fire Extinguishers
Fire extinguishers are often an overlooked, yet necessary household item. By familiarizing yourself with the tips and tricks below, you can be one step ahead in case of a fire damage emergency:
- How many do I need? You should have at least one in your property depending on the size. If there are multiple floors, consider an extinguisher on each level.
- Rechargeable vs non-rechargeable? Some versions require a charge after each use. Others are only meant to be used once and then replaced. You can determine this by inspecting yours. Plastic handles indicate one-use while metal handles typically indicate rechargeable.
- Check the pressure level often. Most fire extinguishers have a gauge where you can see the pressure level and see if it is too low, too high, or just right. If it shows anything besides “just right”, contact the manufacturer listed on the back immediately.
- P.A.S.S. If you experience a fire in your home or property, be sure to do the following: Pull the pin, Aim low, Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly, and Sweep the nozzle from side to side.
In case of emergency, call 911 immediately and find safety outside of the property if the damage is beyond a safe P.A.S.S. If you experience a loss and need restoration services, call PHC at 910-814-2502.
