A friend called me recently after filing a claim on his homeowner’s policy for water damage to his hardwood floors caused by his refrigerator. Apparently the water supply line to the ice maker had been leaking and he didn’t realize it until the floors started buckling. Tears and breaks in water supply lines to appliances such as refrigerators and washing machines is a pretty common water loss claim and though all of them cannot be prevented, here are a few ways we can keep resulting damage to a minimum or avoid damage all together.

-If you have an older washer or refrigerator and have never replaced the water supply line, go ahead and do so. Better to be safe.

-If you are able, pull out your refrigerator while mopping the floor at least a few times a year. Not only will you be able to detect any water leaks sooner, but you can also clean up any dust accumulating which could cause the motor to work harder.

-As the seasons change, check the supply line to the washing machine as well. Since more water runs in and out of the washer, the resulting water damage will be found quicker and can effect more areas of your home.

As always, PHC Restoration has crews available 24 hours a day to assist you with any water damage emergency.
