Do you know the difference between a tornado watch and warning?  A Watch means that a tornado is possible and a Warning means a tornado has been sighted and imminent danger is near.  PHC wants you to know what to do if a tornado is threatening.  So here are some Tornado safety tips that the American Red Cross has put together:

  • The safest place to be is an underground shelter, basement or safe room
  • If no underground shelter is available, a small windowless interior room or hallway on the lowest level is the safest alternative
  • Mobile homes are not safe during tornadoes or severe winds.  Seek shelter in a sturdy building.  Act quickly, do not wait until you see a tornado.
  • If you are caught outdoors, seek shelter immediately.
  • If you are in your vehicle, seek shelter immediately.  If debris is flying around you, pull over and park.  Try to get to a ditch bank, lie down on your stomach and cover your head with your hands.

Tornadoes can occur with little or no warning, so make sure you and your family know what to do and where to go ahead of time.
