Sewage back ups (also known as black water) in the home are never fun and can be very unpleasant.  How much do you really know about black water?

The IICRC lists the following basic principles homeowners should know about sewage backups:

  • Black water contains a variety of disease causing pathogen—fungi, bacteria, viruses and parasites
  • It is not safe to stay in a building that has been flooded with sewage
  • Sewage saturated materials such as carpet, padding, and bedding must be contained and disposed of properly if it cannot be washed in hot water for at least 10 minutes.
  • Only the most highly trained professionals should attempt black water remediation
