If you had to list everything in your attic, garage, or basement today, could you?  Most of us use one of these locations to store items that we don’t always have room for or our out of season clothing or decorations or even extra furniture, but what happens if your home suffers from major fire, storm or water damage.  Could you list everything that you lost?  Do you know the value of these items to ensure you have adequate personal property insurance coverage on your homeowners or renters policy?

As we head into “Spring Cleaning” season, it is as good a time as any to start taking inventory of the contents you have in all rooms of your home in addition to the storage areas.  If you don’t have the time to list everything, take some pictures to document the items you are storing and can also show the condition the property is in.  There are apps you can download to your smartphones or tablets that can also assist in this process.  Once you have finished with your photo or handwritten inventory, review over the lists and try to determine the value and then compare it to the value on your homeowner’s policy to make sure you have the right amount of coverage on your policy.  A study by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners shows that more than half of Americans do not have an inventory and are surprised when they realize they are not carrying enough insurance to replace the items if they were to be lost as a result of a fire, storm or water damage.
