There is something about watching a good movie all warm and cozy next to the fireplace during the winter.  But, did you know that one of the leading causes of home fire deaths each year is heating equipment.  The NFPA has a few simple heating equipment safety tips that can prevent most home fires resulting from heating from happening.

  • Keep anything flammable at least 3 feet away from the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater
  • Do not use your oven to heat your home
  • have your chimneys and heating equipment cleaned and inspected every year
  • turn off portable heaters when you leave a room or go to bed
  • never discard warm ashes from the fireplace and be sure to have sturdy screens on your fireplace to keep sparks from flying into the room

It is a fact that half of the home heating fires are reported in December, January and February.  Please be safe around your heating equipment.
