Today marks the first day of fall which means it’s time to move our long sleeved shirts to the front of the closet, start thinking about Halloween costumes for ourselves and the kids, and enjoy all things flavored with pumpkin and spice. It is also time to prepare our homes for the cooler weather and the fall months.

Here are a few cooler weather preparation tips to get your home ready for Fall:

• Remember as you rake the leaves and/or pine straw in your yard to also check the gutters. These items can clog your gutters preventing water from draining properly.
• If you live in an area where you are able to burn leaves, make sure that the burn pile is away from building structures and trees, that the weather conditions are conducive to burning (little or no wind), the ground isn’t too dry, and that you are able to stay until the fire is completely out.
• Check your doors and windows to make sure the weather stripping is completely sealed to help keep the cool air out of the house.
• If you use your fire place, make sure the chimney has been cleaned to prevent any build up from causing a fire.

These are just a few cooler weather preparation tips to check around your home. Remember to always be observant. If you see any areas of concern either inside your home or outside, take care of them quickly so they will not develop into larger problems.
